God gave Joseph Smith explicit revelation through seer stones known as Urim & Thummim. We are thankful that the “first edition” of seer stone revelations were published so the truth of the Gospel can be found for all who will seek and we can set aside the teachings of men.
The first publishing of the revelations to Joseph Smith were called “The Book of Commandments,” and later they were re-published as “The Doctrine & Covenants” with many changes. We will only cover the most important changes, that allowed false doctrines to be introduced to the young church.

Why Did God have Joseph use Seer Stones?
Accurate translation
We know from testimonies that Joseph Smith would not continue reading unless the scribe correctly wrote what was said. Do you think it’s okay for man to change the words received from the seer stone?
Unwavering testimonies
Even after excommunication, all scribes to Joseph Smith during use of seer stoners eventually left the LDS/Mormon church, but not one recanted or changed their testimonies of the miracle of the translations.
Gentiles will not hear the voice of God
3 Nephi 15:23 “And they understood me not that I said they shall hear my voice; and they understood me not that the Gentiles should not at any time hear my voice—that I should not manifest myself unto them save it were by the Holy Ghost.”
Since Joseph Smith was a gentile, the stones were required.
